Shilpgram - An artisan's village, set up by West Zone Cultural Centre
in Udaipur is a living ethnographic museum. It depicts diversity of
traditional architecture of houses built with local material, life
styles, customs and folk arts of rural and tribal people of different
states of India.
The rural artisans and folk artists reside here and perform in the
natural village surroundings overlooking Aravalli Hills. This 55 acres
of live display attracts 100,000 visitors annually from India and
abroad.
The Shilpgram Utsav organized from December 1-10 every year
needs special mention. It recreates a village fare with festive mood
reflected by folk artists from different parts of the country. The
Terracotta Museum, the museum of masks, folk and musical instruments
are memorable.
Bagore
ki Haveli - Bagore ki Haveli is situated on the banks of lake
Pichola overlooking world famous Hotel Lake Palace. This Haveli was
built by Shri Amarchand Badwa, who was the Prime Minister of Mewar-the
rulers of Mewar Pratap Singh,Maharana Ari Singh, Maharana Hamir Singh
during the period 1751 to 1778. After the death of Amarchand the
edifice came under the domain of Mewar State Royal Family of
Rajasthan, Maharana's brother Nath Singh occupied the Haveli.Whenever
the kings of Mewar were left without a child, the future kings like
Maharana Sardar Singh, Maharana Sajjan Singh were adopted from Bagore
Thikana between 1828 to 1884.
In 1878, Maharana Shakti Singh of Bagore built the
palace on three arch gates. The Haveli was the property of Mewar State
till 1947. After Independence, Government of Rajasthan is managing the
property, which was used for housing Government servants . In 1986,
the Haveli was handed over to West Zone Cultural Centre set up by
Govt. of India to promote art and culture in the western zone of India
in the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Daman Div and
Dadra Nagar Haveli. The entire structure was in a dilapidated
condition which was slowly and carefully conserved and restored with
the help of experts to its pristine glory.

Bagore ki Haveli has 135 rooms, balconies, court
yards, terraces and numerous corridors. The Queen's chamber still preserve
the finest fresco paintings of Rajasthan in the Mewar style. The
glass and mirror inlay within the Haveli is Unique and procured in its
original form. The two peacocks made with small pieces of colored glasses
are unique reflection of the finest craftsmanship of glass work. |
